What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose Veins occur when blood pools in the veins that are closest to the skin. These veins can appear to be bulging out of the skin, and normally blueish purple in colour and twisted.

In normal circumstances the muscles in the legs and the veins will work together in harmony to pump blood to the heart. But for someone who is suffering with Varicose Veins this process does not work properly due to the veins are being stretched and weak. In essence the valves that prevent the reflux of blood back down to leg give way to the point where the veins become enlarged when they clearly should not be larger.
For those who are suffering from the problem will know how unsightly the veins can look and how the problem can significantly affect the confidence a person. This is especially true if the veins appear on skin that is normally visible. For example women who have Varicose veins on their legs or arms will find it difficult to wear clothes that exposes these areas.

Varicose veins is not just a cosmetic problem. If the left untreated then this can lead to considerable pain on a long-term. In extreme cases the affected areas can be prone to ulcers and then infections.
